The unique Horse Museum located 8km outside Anyksciai is the only of its kind in Lithuania. The importance of the horse to the country’s economy and agriculture is the main theme of the exhibits collected in the Museum.
The Museum was founded on the initiative of professor of agronomy Petras Vasinauskas (1906-1995). He became famous after his horse journey across Lithuania. Having in mind the importance of the horse, P.Vasinauskas along with a journalist Vladas Vaicekauskas in 1975 made a 1051 km journey across Lithuania for 43 days. Horse named Beris was pulling “lineika”.
The professor has chosen Anyksciai because of lots of tourists coming here. The organisational council was teamed up, and the construction of the Museum started, collecting exhibits from all over the Lithuania. The Museum was opened in June 10 1978 and the folk festival “Run, Stallion, Run” was organised. Since 1992 The Horse Museum became a branch of A.Baranauskas and A.Vienuolis-Zukauskas Memorial Museum.
The Museum also contains live exhibits – horses. Anyksciai agricultural school takes care of them and also supports when riding horses or when taking a ride in a carriage. Eleven buildings belong to the Museum. More than 20 000 tourists visit this unique Museum every year.Back
