Puntukas: A Boulder With a Story to Tell
Puntukas is the second-largest boulder in Lithuania and one of the country’s best-known natural landmarks. According to legend, the devil carried the enormous stone to destroy a nearby church, but failed to reach his destination before sunrise.
The boulder also carries an important piece of Lithuanian history. In 1943, sculptor Bronius Pundzius carved the portraits of Lithuanian pilots Steponas Darius and Stasys Girėnas into its surface. The two pilots became national heroes after their historic 1933 flight from the United States towards Lithuania.
Laimės Žiburys: Don’t Forget to Count the Steps
Another interesting stop in Anykščiai is Laimės Žiburys, a monument dedicated to Lithuanian writer Jonas Biliūnas. Its name comes from his famous story about people climbing a mountain in search of a magical light that promises happiness.
